The King season on the Hanford Reach is coming to an end. The upper Reach above the Old Hanford town site is closed, but the lower section through the Tri-cities is open through the end of the month. Saturday was an excellent day for my clients. With deer season open and the upland and waterfowl season starting, we had the river to ourselves. By noon, we had 13 kings on and got our 3 man limit of 9 kings in the boat! Super baits, again, were the ticket for us with the flavor of the day being Krill and Garlic. I find that as we get later in the season, the garlic scent really starts to shine. Early in the season, I like to use plain tuna. As the season progresses, I start spicing up my baits by adding scents and chemicals that the salmon really crave. When I do that, you basically treat your tuna as a sponge to hold the scents you are using. I will fish the Reach all the way until the end of the month. The fish are starting to get pretty dark, but if you are selective with what you decide to keep, you can still find some fish that are suitable for the smoker. I have a few clients that book these late season trips every year because the fishing is usually amazing and the pressure on the water really tapers off. Nothing like catching a dozen kings by noon with no one else around! After this weekend we will be transitioning to steelhead fishing on the Reach and Snake, and sturgeon fishing on the Columbia.
