Maybe this report will get me off the Hook. Ha! Ha! Visited the fish market yesterday!  Wow, still wondering how I could be so fortunate!  Caught 4 fish in two hours, very windy conditions but not too cold.  The 1st fish was about 15".  The next one was close to 20".  The 3rd one was very special, a wild redband native fish close to 22" (my guess).  I used the phone to photo it and cut the leader to let it go. Wild ones have to be released.  I did not touch the fish, probably increasing  it's chance of survival.

Thanks very much for all the positive comments on my last report of 3-7-2017!

Keep wild fish in the water. Don't drag them up on the sand for some glory shot.

Nice catch and great report! That redband is gorgeous. Were you using powerbait? If so, I can't believe our caught a wild fish

Gorgeous fish! Bet it fought like crazy too. Those are always such a treat to catch. Great job on the keepers too.

Oh come on guys. How can you support this? We're trying to protect the redband population and the way this fish was handled definitely isn't helping the cause. Not only is it taken out of the water and drug up on the sand, you can see he's stepping on it's tail so it won't flop around while he's taking a picture of its adipose. Technically this is illegal.

I think all they are saying is you could of been a little more tactful in your comment... offending someone isn't really going to help them out. Awesome catch troutfisherman that is an absolutely gorgeous fish! Please do keep those wild fish in the water best you can, it will help increase survival. All I see per regs is salmon/steelhead/bull trout/dolly varden as unlawful to remove from water, doesn't mention redbands/rainbow. Correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks for the report. Sure seems like I have been hooking a higher ratio of Redbands since they passed the rule on not keeping them. You can generally tell before you see them, they do seem to give you a better fight for sure.
Fishman_Kuzan, Right on, none of us get it right every time.

Pg 5 of the current regs pamphlet states, "FRESHWATER: “It is unlawful to totally remove salmon, steelhead, or Dolly Varden/Bull Trout from the water if it is unlawful to retain those fish,or if the angler subsequently releases the salmon, steelhead, Dolly Varden/Bull Trout.”

Redband rainbow are not a protected species and the pamphlet corrections did not change the wording quoted above. Can't be technically illegal if handling isn't addressed in the pamphlet.

Unless or until WDFW changes handling rules to include redband trout in the existing definition on pg 5, there is no basis for declaring it illegal to remove them from the water.

That said, we should do our best to minimize stress to ANY fish we release whether or not legal to retain. ;-)
