After reading Ken & Barb's report on Hell's Canyon, I decided to give it a shot at Wawawai Park on the Snake.
Left the house @ 4:30 AM , air temp was 22*. I stopped in Deer Park to hook up with my fishing partner, and off to Wawawai we went!
There was some fog around Spangle, but the roads were bare and dry. Cold and clear.
We had lines in the water by 8AM using standard bobber/shrimp set ups. Air temp was 27* with a slight breeze. Within an hour the breeze was brisk. Then it started to blow!
The wind made for a tough drift, but we hung in there.
I changed over to a Stee-Lee spoon for a thousand casts with no hits. Then I tried spoons and spinners for another thousand casts. Nothing. Big John had his bait stolen a few times, but with the wind it was hard to detect a take down.
So, we decided to move below Lower Granite to try and get out of the wind. We took a lunch break and drove over the dam to a spot below the construction site. We fished that for 2 hours and decided to move again
Back to Almota to fish the sunny afternoon in a brisk wind. We fished 2 more hours and called it quits.
We left the river with the sun shining but by the time I got home, just before 6PM, there was an inch of snow with more on the way!Good timing!
Whew, what a day!

Hey guys, next time try driving a little further. This time of the year I bet you'll have better luck further upstream, between Asotin and Heller Bar.

First Light; Sorry you didn't have any luck where you were fishing. I second that on driving a little farther, you will find some good bobber fishing spots between Couse Creek and Heller Bar. There's a couple of spots with big back eddy's about a half mile below Heller Bar that might be productive, I have seen bobber fisherman there often. A couple of my friends fish this area from shore, and catch a lot of Steelhead. There are a lot of large pullouts along there, and access is easy. Get on Google maps and pick out the spots to try. Thanks for the pictures.

Ahoy Mates!
Thanks for the tips on where to try on my next trip!
It's 4 1/2 hours to Heller Bar from home, not counting pistol stops. It's a little out of range for a day trip. It took me 2 days to recover from the Wawawai trip. Sounds like 1-2 nights minimum for maximum exposure to metal-heads! Thanks again!
Keep yur tip up,
Capt. Todd
