Well the salmon fishing has really perked up over the last 3 weeks, not to say the fishing has been poor because it has been an excellent winter and spring for fishing here in Vancouver.
The early Fraser River and Columbia river chinook are starting to show up in good numbers off South Bowen Island and in Howe Sound close to Vancouver. The resident chinook are still here in great numbers and have been fattening up on the abundance of herring in the area for months. Most of the chinook we have been hooking are 10-20bs and chrome. We saw a great herring spawn in local waters in March and the salmon have been hot on their heels for weeks.
The South Bowen Island fishery which is a local fishery will stay steady all of April and most of May, which will leed us into the much anticipated Gulf Islands chinook and coho fishery for May and June. Chinook and coho salmon as well as good numbers of ling cod and some halibut makes this fishery a lot of fun.
We have been having success with a variety of glow spoons from Gibbs tackle and Silver Horde in 3"-4" behind UV and Glow flashers. Yesterday we had most of our success on Splatter-back hoochies and white-glow hoochies behind UV flashers. We found 60-90' the most active in 800' of water off Bowen Island. Massive amounts of Grey cod in the area kept us busy clearing our lines which became frustrating as often, we did not know we were dragging them.
Prawn and crab fishing has been great as well.
