2 day fly fishing report.
The last 2 days have been amazing on my local flow, the warm weather we have had lately has set off a chum fry hatch and turned on the resident fish which seemed dormant until now, its all been anadromous fish before now. Ive hit fish on adult may flies (size 8 dry flies) clousers, leeches, wooley buggers but especially white or green leeches in size 6.
Yesterday i went 2/8 on src and 3/6 on resident rainbows (that i could clearly see) and lost a 5-6lb steelhead, i mostly fished a white size 6 uv leech w/ gold bead
Today i fished that and a green leech and went 2/3 on sea run cutthroat and went 4/? (alot)On resident rainbows and missed the same steelhead twice in the same run, just couldnt get the hook set well enough. Keep in mind all rivers in bc require barbless hooks. The chum fry were out in droves, being chased out of the water by hungry cutties, lots of kingfishers and great blue herons too.
I fished a single hand 6wt (st.croix legend ultra) and 8'-10' of #1 tippet on full floating line. Swinging and stripping worked as well as as dry flies fished wet and/or skated.
The resident bows are quite small 8" on average and the sea run cutts are much larger at 10"-18" (that ive caught personally) although i believe there are larger ones. The biggest one i landed in these last 2 days was only 14" however, although i missed a few larger ones that i could clearly see in the water.
