Today was our last and final day of fishing out of the B.C. town of Zeballos with Reel Obsession Sportfishing. Our host, Adrian O’Connor, had taken us to some of the prime fishing locations offshore. We had captured a ton of great footage for a future video and TV show, and today the plan was to finish filling out our travel limits on halibut and kings.

The morning started off wet, not a heavy rain, but an intermittent drip drip drip and occasional shower. The seas, meanwhile, were calm, allowing us an easy ride out to our first offshore location. Adrian found our spot, deployed the anchor, and in no time at all we were pulling up our remaining halibut to fill our travel limits.

I must say, if you want an almost certainty of catching halibut, you can’t go wrong fishing out of Zeballos. The halibut are plentiful and willing. Our big fish today were a couple in the 40 pound range, and one “under” of about 15 pounds.

As we were catching our halibut, other Reel Obsession boats started reporting catching salmon incidentally while trolling for bottomfish. Taking that cue, we moved to their location and put out the salmon gear. Over the next hour and a half we had one of the best, if not the best, chinook bites I hae ever experienced. Today the big chinook went to Rob as he caught a beautiful 25 pound chrome bright king. Aaron and I each caught a king, and I lost another big fish at the boat. The bite died off and we had to return since it was driving home day.

Our journey had come to an end. A dream fulfilled, fishing Vancouver Island, Canada. The fishing was everything I had heard, and then some. The accommodations at Reel Obsession were outstanding. We can’t thank Adrian enough for sharing his slice of heaven with us and the other members of NWFR.
