I was going to get up and head out to Lake Stevens, but the recent poor fishing reports there (guides are struggling) coupled with the weather uncertainty, I made an executive decision at 3am when the alarm went off that I would instead get a few more hours sleep and go to Goodwin instead.
I decided this morning I wanted to try a bunch of different things that what I normally use there. For awhile I ran different spoons, pop gear with a wedding ring, a few flatfish etc. I got absolutely nothing with them. Finally I realized I was running out of time as it was Mothers Day and I had lunch plans with my wife (she let me fish, I had best be home on time). So threw on my normal stuff, Macks Dodgers, Green Doc Spratley on one line and a Woolly Bugger on the other.
I had 6 hook ups in my last hour, landed 4. 2nd fish I am reeling in, reach for my net....... it's not there. It was there for the first fish I caught. Somehow, more than likely when I was putting it back the first time, I didn't get the handle all the way in the slot I guess, and it must have went into the drink. So last 3 fish I hoisted into the kayak. So far this year I've landed a large chunk of carpet, some terry cloth wrist bands, and now I have made someone else's day if they manage to snag into my net.
All fish that hit the line today came at 25 feet. Didn't seem to matter total water depth. Some came in 35 feet of water, others 30. I marked a lot of fish between 15-25 feet. They would not bite at any depth other than 25 feet. I talked to a few other boats on the water, it was a rough day for most. 3 guys I talked to had 1 fish, I spoke with 2 other guys that between them had 2. This spring, or lack there of, I think has really messed with these lakes that don't have just planted fish.
