This is the second of the Memorial weekend kokanee fest reports. So after fishing Roosevelt Saturday and the weather was so awesome why not give Loon night fishing a whirl? It's a bit early but why not..... called brother in law Dan and sure enough he wanted to go. Took all of the gear for Roosevelt out of the boat and re-fitted with the night fishing gear for Loon. We have a propane double mantel lantern, Floating car headlights, spare car battery to run them, anchors for both ends of the boat, Feather Lite yellow Eagle Claw rods spooled with braided line. Mac's glow hooks (the white ones) and Swedish Pimples for flash and weight. Corn died pink and last but not least squirmy maggots. Or the French version magoti'. Don't forget the strobe to glow up the tackle.
We launched around 7:45 and headed for the south end of the lake in the Granite Point area. Anchored the boat in 32 feet of water where I have an X in the bottom of the lake. Set up the lantern and floating lights, baited up the rigs and dropped to the bottom one crank up. Then you wait for the oh so shuttle tap of the kokanee. There's one, rats missed him! Bites again, missed him. Bet the little bait steeling thief got my corn, yep sure did. Re-bait the corn and down it goes; tap,tap..gotcha! The first kokanee is in the cooler and the skunk is off the boat. Only one here and there and then the magic hour (10 pm) appears and the sonar lights up. It's time for a Loon Lake kokanee fest!! We stop and count, I've got mine why isn't my brother in law catching his? They are avoiding his bait. Bring that up let's take a look. Ah ha he had on a pink glow hook Not as much glow as the white ones. Here take my extra rig and he immediately finished out the five fish he needed for a limit, twenty in the cooler and it's 10:30. Time for a pleasant 5 mph ride back to the dock with a beautiful sliver of the moon in the sky.
Night fishing for kokanee is a blast! Till next time....
Tight lines - Alan
