I went to the annual Men's Retreat at Kettle Falls, Lake Roosevelt and fished Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. The weather was overall good except for some wind Sunday.
Friday; We headed out with great expectations for a walleye catching fest. Went to one our favorite spots for some action on shallow diving plugs. First cast whamo, love the way walleye hit plugs! Now for the rest of the story I also bottom bounced a variety of spinners and I caught zero for the rest of the day!! Friend Bill caught 5 more and that was it.
Saturday: We heard the fishing was great at China Bend so opted to make the 25 mile run from Kettle Falls to China Bend as the water is still too low to launch up river. Wood, wood and more wood would characterize the trip up. Be sure to use your mapping on the GPS and watch out for submerged rocks anywhere in Roosevelt this time of year. Peril lies just under the surface in some areas as the water was rising at least 2' a day. I found a chunk of cotton wood from a beaver when we were almost to China Bend while running at 4,600 rpm against the current. Wham and the prop ventilated while the motor computer kept the motor from over revving. Oh boy did we just loose the lower end? Shut down and ran the motor up for a look; no damage to the stainless prop. WOW thanks Darren at Precession Propeller for a great product!! When I went to put the motor back down it wouldn't go down. Ran it back up and the 2.5" diameter piece of beaver cottonwood was stuck in the tilt bracket. Retrieved a very heavy semi-buoyant chunk of wood with a huge propeller gash in it. No wonder I didn't see it.
The only run that was fishable had someone else working it so we tried fishing in 4 mph current with no success. Finally ran the 25 miles back down stream and managed 10 walleyes bottom bouncing green spinners with crawler.
Fished Sunday for a few hours and I borrowed a walleye rig from Captain Dave. managed to put on a walleye clinic with that one. We put 30 in the boat in short order between the three of us. What a great day of walleye fishing.
many thanks to all who make this wonderful outing possible!

It's hard to imagine what happens when the prop gets ventilated (air) while at high load settings. I was running at 4,600 RPM against a four knot current. The noises were BAD for sure. If it had been an aluminum prop there would be nothing left; not good in the fast moving water! Gotta love the stainless .....it's a great wood chopper!!

Al,

I was up at China Bend on Saturday also; I took my buddy Jay out and we easily boated 100 eyes. We worked both the big eddy side and the left side below the rocks. We caught almost all of our eyes on 4" swim baits with green/red flake and perch Cabela's hootchie cootchies doing the most damage. We never tipped our jigs with worms because the bite was already very active. Most of our fish were caught in less than 20' of water. We may also have fed the eagles a few times; it is always amazing to have an eagle snatch a fish within 20' of your boat and the pair up there at China Bend are not shy what so ever. We also had to dodge all of the wood, mostly, on our long trip up from Kettle. Thankfully the ride back down was much less of an adventure. I will be up there again on Sunday in my Tracker with my oldest daughter, we should be able to launch out of China Bend if the water continues to rise at its present rate.

Thanks Mark - As always you are the consummate walleye fishermen. I don't know much about the China Bend area and we didn't want to spend a bunch of time up there for no fish exploring. Looks like "no fish" was not a problem for you! Have fun with your daughter Sunday - Alan

Great report Alan and that's a dandy 'bow Dave is hoisting. Happy to hear you had a nice, and productive, weekend. Really need to use caution, there's some really nasty stuff in the water now. Saw a vertical deadhead Wednesday, about 15" diameter and only about 6 - 8" above the surface. With some wind chop very hard to see and something like that would rip a lower unit off at any on plane speed - please be careful!
