Its your lucky day. You just stumbled upon the greatest kokanee report of all time. Only every so often are significant achievements and advancements in kokanee fishing made. Today and this report documents one of those leaps in the sport of kokanee angling.
This past week I was sitting in the backyard drinking a bunch of beer and watching chicken tv, we can't afford cable so I just watch my chickens, when I had an idea. In my hand was an ice cold blue can of Kokanee beer all decked out in glorious Rocky Mountain glaciers and filled with the nectar of the gods.
"Could I catch a kokanee on a can of Kokanee beer?", I thought.
Using what brain cells I had remaining I quickly crafted a dodger from a crushed beer can and with some swivels, split rings, and hooks converted the tab into a lure.
The next day after work I set out to Alta Lake to earn my place among the legendary kokanee anglers of the Pacific Northwest. Dropping the rig over the side I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of action on the Kokanee beer dodger but the tab was spinning nicely so I tweeked the can a bit and sent it down into the murky depths hoping that a silvery salmon would come a knocking.
Fifteen minutes later my Eagle Claw featherlight jumped into action. My heart raced as I pulled the rod from the holder. The fight was stronger than expected, perhaps a Rainbow Trout, I thought. As every great kokanee angler knows the fastest way to lose a fish is to hurry. The slow crank of retrieving 80' of monofilament line felt like eternity but alas my gear finally came into view and in tow was a robust kokanee. As the fat kokanee slipped into the net I whooped with joy!
I always knew I was put upon this Earth to achieve great things (my mom told me this all the time). It was never really clear to me how I would go about achieving this glory and elevation. Today I have no doubt, I am among the greatest kokanee fisherman of all time. You might disagree with me and you'd be dead wrong if you did.
I want this story to be told not just to pump up my ego or even get some free beer from Kokanee (although that would be sweet!). I really just want to inspire people to pursue their passions. Dream a dream and make it happen. If a humble kayak angler who works in a fishing department of a retail store can achieve greatness...then so can you.
