I met up with Kyle Jones of Jones Sportfishing to try our luck at the Buoy 10 fishery. I brought along my wife Hillary and daughter Sarah and also had NWFR team members Luke Hatfield and Robbie Sy fishing near us much of the day to grab a little extra footage.
Kyle keeps a slip at East Basin in Astoria for this fishery and we were on our way by 6:15 am. It wasn't easy getting to the boat through the traffic and I'm told nearly every launch was this way.
Kyle had us fishing marker 1 by the entrance to Ilwaco in the morning.
As soon as we got our gear in the water we slammed a double. One was a small King we released and one was a native Coho, also released.
Through the morning we put 2 Kings and a Coho in the box with a few releases and several lost fish. A lot of hard take downs that never stuck as well.
Kyle's preferred set-up is exactly what he uses farther up river: Pro-Troll flashers and Brads cut-plug Super Baits stuffed with tuna. Much of the day we were fishing at 25-35' depth using a 16-20 oz cannonball.
I saw a lot of nets flashing and a share of boats that didn't have it figured out as well. A massive fleet of boats of all sizes out there!
We finished with four keeper Kings and a Coho, a total of 10 fish to the boat, and a lot of action on our boat, all by 2 pm and Luke & Robbies boat produced several fish too.
A fun day and a great fishery!
