Smallmouth Bass

Got to the park at 6:30AM. It's still dark and there are no lights at the launch, so be careful!

Started off shallow with no bass bites. Felt like little perch.

Sun is breaking over the hills and hitting the west bank, so I moved over there and hit a few spots. Caught 2, 1# SMB but netted 3 fish on this side of the lake.... I heard surface splashing. Looked like a fish. Got closer and see it's a ~2# SMB with a big bite out of it. Still alive so had to have been very recently. Poor guy. Thinking either a shark or otter. Betting it's the shark. 2 eagles were high up in the tree looking down but wouldn't go after it. After about 10 mins fishing away, a heron does a flyby grab but fails since the fish is too big. So it perches up on a dock that's closest to the fish waiting, lol.

Moved up the lake and caught me another ~1.5# SMB.

Start moving down the lake since I had a short fishing day. Met up with AMX at 4# hole. I caught myself another dink and saw AMX catch one there too.

Slow fishing. When I was loading up, another guy said it was slow for him too. Only perch.

Dinkie Doo day today. Lost one later that felt big. But the second hookset did it in. Musta been held by only a skin hook in the mouth or a fiber on the lip. Oh well. Second time I've done that this week.

Probably a weedshark. I hate weedsharks. I think I'll raise me up a pterdactle and teach it to hunt weedsharks.

I can't go tomorrow, not enough gas, and payday isn't until Mon. Took twice the gas as usual today due to the traffic, and took twice the time to get to the lake. Had to get $5 worth of gas to get home.

I haven't posted the last few times I've been out on the lake. Been some tough fishing which is odd as last year I was in the money every Fall day. They definitely have gone deeper, but unlike last year, not bunched up. Still catching some nice fish, but not many. Lots of dinks. DS only on the rig. The hits are subtle, but so aggressive, they set the hook themselves and mostly pushing the entire hook through the top of their mouth. Kind of difficult to get the hook out as I have to push the eyelet back through their face. I went Wednesday this week, so I missed you again. Would be fun to catch up and talk sometime. I'm trying lots of new stuff with varied success, but don't feel like posting it for all to see. All legal, but not the norm for here. Lots of reconnaissance and learning even when not fishing.

Had a late start on Weds. I actually didn't see many boats out that day. Today, Thursday, there were lots of boats on the water.

I try to keep an eye out for your Crestliner, but I haven't seen it since the day I found out it was you after all.

Tip on the hooks, pinch the barb. Release is much easier. And I always use my pliers bc I've had the eye and pointy end damage my fingers a few times.

I hate pointy end damage. My thumb now has a scar from the pointy end insert from a month plus ago. And it was a 2.7 Largie that did it. I named him 'Scar Fish'.

Oh, and the finger has a slight scar line from the same incident.

Oh yes, line burns on my fingers too. Grabbing the line at the side of the boat to pull in and it flops or jumps. Ffffuuuuuuu.

Crazy... Unless a predator (obviously a shark) took the bite while you were reeling in...... ...that bass hit your tackle with its insides on its outside?

No, it was flopping on the surface. I pulled up to it and netted the fish. This count as a catch right?

I think he netted that fish while it was floating on the surface.

Yup, any way you can get a fish in the boat counts as a catch. :-)

I had a double catch last year, or was it the year before? Hmmm. It was a 2lb Smallie that had a big crappie in it's throat and it couldn't swallow it. The Smallie was flopping on the surface so I went over there. I removed the crappie and the Smallie finaly swam down, took a long time to get him to swim, but I did what I could and at least gave him a chance to live. Someday I hope to catch him with a hook instead of the net.
