This report is for the Carbon River, Saturday October 7th. I woke up to chilly 42°F and decided to pack up my gear and head for the river. With the pink run essentially over, I suspected that most of the crowd would be absent for my morning outing. I got to the stretch I wanted to fish at 7:30 am and had a crowd of two other anglers.
I started with a 1/2 oz pink spoon, cast and retrieve. Within a dozen casts or so, just as I was nearing the end of my retrieve and the spoon started to come into view, a massive king came out of the depths and ate the spoon and swam off. We fought for a good three seconds before he broke off and took my spoon with him. Switched to jigs afterwards with no luck. Switched to spinners afterwards with a few hits. Switched back to spoons and had fairly consistent bites and hook ups, but nothing to shore.
Fish were still moving up the river, and there were plenty of rollers coming to surface, but almost all of them were colored.
