Yet another chronicle of that intrepid little vessel the Tin-Guppy. This report covers a camping/fishing trip to Ft. Spokane from 10/10 to10/16. My first trip in over two years that I finally found something that worked better for me that my Orange Kekeda. Got down Tuesday evening 10/10 and got a good spot in the campground, first time I had ever stayed there. Fished Wednesday by myself and then the wife came down and my friend Jim came over from Vancouver. The wind was giving me fits in the mouth of the river so I went down to the Sterling Point area and finished my limit down there. Marcia , Jim and I fished the mouth of the river and had some pretty steady action on Thursday with somewhat variable weather but not really a problem. We also made a run to Hawk Creek but couldn't find any Walleye there, probably operator error. Friday we tried several spots on the Arm and were able to locate our Rainbows but no Walleye action. Upstream from the campground I hooked and netted the Mike Singletary of wild Rainbow trout. Gave me the most memorable fight I can remember. I am using a 7ft Okuma Kokanee SST and he gave me all I could handle. Released swimming strongly. Marcia had to go back to town so Jim and I fished Saturday morning with steady action until I had to go back to town and Jim went back to Vancouver. I got back Saturday evening and had Sunday to myself. After a lazy start around 10:30 I quickly had 4 and started switching to more Kokanee orientated gear. Had all pink gear and leaded line on my bigger rod when the reel started screaming, Oh Boy here we go. Made a couple of hard runs and turned over a couple of times way back there then it just kind of got dead and heavy. What a wreck. What I hadn't noticed is a RB hit the light rod and didn't take it off the downrigger. Turned out to be a true double, 2 fish on one rod with one pass of the net. Took a while but the wild one swam away. The Guppy is very wind sensitive and something like that can keep you hopping when you are solo. A really great day on the water. Monday my buddy Wes came down to fish and bring the boat back while I pulled the TT. Beautiful weather but the bite was much slower for us that the previous days. Oh well we didn't have anything else going so why not fish all day. We finished up in the afternoon and I had the trolling speed up to 3.2 when we started getting some regular hits. Don't know if it was the speed or maybe just an evening bite coming on.
Oh, what out fished my favorite Orange Kekeda? The Perch Kekeda. David you can expect my order in the near future. I am sure I would have hooked more fish if I had more Perch flies.

Yours was a great report! I have never been on Sprague Lake but reading your report and remembering the ones you posted last winter makes me think I should give it a try. Where do you launch at?

Had me worried there at the beginning! Good to hear the Kekedas are still working for you. The orange had a long run for you. Those look like great healthy Roosevelt rainbows. Sounds like a really fun adventure for the days you were up there. Thanks for sharing your success and as always for using the flies. -Dave

Hi guys, Im headed to Roosevelt tomorrow and would like to get some of the kekeda flies. Im staying in Coulee city, Ive never trolled there before and figured Id launch behing Grand Coulee dam and fish Banks. Is there a tackle store around there I can buy them? Also, what pound test do you use and how deep? Im unfamiliar with the area so any help with locations and techniques and where to buy the flies would be great. Thanks much

Nice haul Mark! Looks like you're full time retired. The perch Kekeda has always been a favorite in the fall with the orange taking over as we get into winter. Amazing how increased speed really helps sometimes too.

The only place I know of to get Kekeda Flies is from esty on the internet. David is real good at getting the orders out quickly but I doubt you can get any tomorrow. I generally use either 12lb Seaguar FC or 8lb P-Line, just whichever one I grab from the box. Not too technical here. About all I know about Banks is how to find it, I generally fish somewhere between Spring Canyon and Ft. Spokane and also up the Spokane Arm. Hope you have a good trip.

Thanks so much, Probably not going to be able to get them in time. First time there with boat so it will be an exploratory trip which is always a good time trying to figure them out. From what i have read the trout are in tne upper 20 foot column and walleye are in the dirt.

Hendersd, if this is an exploratory trip to Roosevelt, I would recommend a Rippin Minnow (green or perch color are effective) with 3 colors of leaded line and troll about 2.5-3.5 mph. You will cover a lot of ground and it works well. Rapalas work well but they often can't be trolled at the fastest speeds. Hope this helps and tight lines.

Thank you, it seems like from what ive read they like a fast troll. Do I have a shot at rainbows if I launch at grand coulee dam?

Yes. I think both sides of the lake can be productive.

Guess I didn't mention that for the most part the fish seemed to be near the surface, ran 8 to 10 ft most of the time from 2.3mph to 3.2 mph. Took the dodgers off when above 3 mph.

You guys are great, I really appreciate the info. Its a bucket list trip with bunch of family so want to make it fun. Im total walleye newbie so im looking forward to learning about them. I rented house in coulee city so Banks lake is where Ill fish them. The wife and I bank fished the pens at Rufus Woods 3 years ago and caught some huge triploids I promised myself next time Im bringing boat.

Good luck out there! If you're leaving from Spokane tonight and still wanted some flies give me a call and we can try to figure something out. I really appreciate the interest in them. Like others have said, unfortunately there aren't any stores that carry them. Maybe if enough people keep asking a store will want to pick them up.
