Report:
The last few days I’ve been fishing Les Davis pier in the mornings as the sun rises.(if it’s not foggy) Benn averaging about 2lbs of squid for 2 hrs of jiggin. Some have been quite large. There have been a bunch of (I’ve never caught a squid before) folks out there, so I thought I would share my tackle/ technique.
Tackle
I like a fly rod 6 wt + with a light spinning reel. But, any steelhead rod will work. Spooled with 20lb braid. I tie the braid to a 6 bead swivel. I use 25 lb fluorocarbon leader from swivel to jigs. Separate jigs by about a foot. I only use two jigs. Smaller one on top bigger one on bottom.
Technique
I like to flip my jigs out about 30’ or so and let them sink a bit. Keep track of how much you let it sink so you can repeat if you hook one. Small 6 in lift, then drop slowly with a tight line. Most squid will attack the jig on the slow drop and you can feel it with the tight line and braid. The tight line drop also helps you feel the bottom so you can reel up before getting snagged. Sometimes the squid are on the bottom and sometimes suspended. Try different depths until you find them. Watch the people who are catching them and try to copy their depth. I haven’t used a flood light but I do like to use a UV light to make my jigs glow.
I hope that helps somebody. I’ve been having a ton of fun out there and so should everyone else. Good luck! Tight lines! Squid on!
