After all of my reading up and video watching I hit the beach by Grayland for winter Surf Perch. The rod I caught on was a 9’ light Ugly Stik Crappie rod with 15# braid, a 1 oz sliding sinker with 24” of 14# leader, a #4 bait hook with half of a brown power worm on it.
I carted my stuff down to the beach and set up about 20’ from the surf as I scanned the beach for a likely place to start. I spotted a ‘trough’ and cast into it as I waded around in my chest waders. Second or third cast I felt a bite and pulled in a smallish red tail perch! First ten minutes and I already have a fish!
Two casts later I felt a big hit and started pulling it in. Felt like I was dragging a weight. Figured it was a crab. Yup. 8” Dungeness. Cool. This ocean fishing is easy!
Except I never got another bite... Threw a number of things at them and ‘may’ have had a nibble or two but no other fish caught. Lost two sets of sinker sliders complete with hooks and bait. Bummer. Still was fun though!
