No hookups....but I did get a juvenile bald eagle to swoop down on my fly as I was stripping it back in. Those birds are impressive. Fish and Game was there...first time I've been checked this year. Nice guys. Steelhead fishing with fly gear in the snow....only way it could get better is if I hooked up on one!

water was a little higher than previous days and seemed pretty cloudy. I was at a new location though....so hard to tell.

I was unaware that hatchery steelhead still make it up the puyallup. Then again I have never fished the puyallup. There's a few rivers down south that get decent fish coming through. Ever thought of trying the humptulips

I'm going to try the OP over the next few months, but need to cash in my 'hall passes' carefully! Was trying to practice my casting and just get used to fishing a river before heading west. Can't wait to get out there.

For the most part, they don't. The Muckleshoot Tribe raises and releases around 40k smolts annually on the White river, but these are unclipped fish. A few thousand return on a good year, but being unclipped fish you cannot retain them. That being said, I have seen a couple hatchery fish caught over the years though they are believed to be stray fish from the Green or other puget sound hatchery runs. So if you find a hatchery Steelhead on the Puy or one of its tribs, go buy a lotto ticket!
