I ranked these days a 2 because ANY safe day on the water has to be better than a 1, regardless of the fishing. Ha!

I appreciate all the posts and great information here. Thank you all. Full disclosure, I’m a newbie…on this forum, fishing on Lake Roosevelt, and minimal fishing in general. I enjoy being on the water and it’s a way to get my 16 yr old son away from the computer games! He likes it but I want him to catch fish.
We’ve been out three days in the last week and have been skunked every time. I didn’t mark a lot of fish on my electronics. I’m hoping its the changing water level but I’m sure it also has to do with my lack of experience too.

Feb 3rd – we launched at Ft Spokane and trolled downriver by the big rock, crossed over and came back by Hawk Creek (we were there from 10:00-3:00). Two rods on downriggers at various depths, mostly 5-20’, back from the boat about 175’, 2-3mph. One rod with a Mack DD dodger, ½ oz. weight, and fly. Used orange, perch, and chartreuse Kekeda flies tipped with night crawler. Also tried a pink hoochie tipped with krill soaked corn. What a gorgeous day. No fish though.

Feb 4th – Some guys at the launch did well with jigging walleye in 20-30’ so we decided to come back and get the skunk off the boat. It didn’t occur to me to look for those Walleye in 140’. Fished various jigs with nightcrawlers 8:00-2:00 just above the Spokane Arm by the campground/rocks. Another beautiful day but geez, skunked again.

Feb 11th – Let’s try trolling again. Did mostly the same as above but launched at Seven Bays and went downriver farther past the goat farm and back the other side. Also tried some spinners and anise scent on the hoochie. Fished 8:00-1:00. Nothing.

Thinking about hiring a guide to show us the ropes. I enjoy the trial and error but the kid isn’t so patient and I want to keep him interested. Hope you all are doing better. It looked like everyone was killing it until just before we went out. It sure has been beautiful weather to be out there.

It's not just you. Fishing is tough this time of year and we haven't been marking any fish either. Whish doesn't mean much since we rarely marked fish even when the Koke fishing was hot a couple years ago.
I'm blaming the water level drop, murky and cold water temp.

That's why they call it fishing, not catching - posted a report after myself and neighbor/fish'in buddy were on the lake last Wednesday
and it wasn't the best of days, but he did nail two nice ones - both he and I are in our very late 70's and caught our first fish over 70 years
ago - me in CO and MN and he in ND. Read the reports on this website, past and present, follow what others use, and go where the
other boats do - two ideas come to mind.......Monkey see, monkey do and persistence is omnipotent - better times will come - the annual
draw down doesn't help cuz they will scatter as they don't want to get caught when the pond goes dry so to speak, AND, just when you think
you've got them figured out they'll throw you a curve. We hope to be out there again later this week, hope to see you.

A much better speed I found has been 1.7mph +or- . this time of year they are usually on top and unless you are right over them you won't mark them!

Thanks wetworker57. When you say “on top”, do you mean literally? I ran flies from my downriggers at 5 and 10 feet. Maybe just let them ride on top? I’ll try slowing up a bit too. Thanks for the tips.

Hang in there Scooter, and my compliments to you for being such a great father to your son and showing him the great outdoors. I'm certainly no expert on Roosevelt but I do know that Austin Moser (Austin's Northwest Adventures) is a guide who frequents there a LOT and he does catch a lot of fish if they are to be had. He might be the guide that can help you kick stat your success. I have also heard from multiple sources that Rufus Woods below Grand Coulee is producing a lot of very nice triploids. That may also be a great way to get your son into some really nice fish.

Thanks for the report. Couple of observations. I normally will troll much closer to 1 mph and no deeper than 15ft. I have found I need to have a setback at about 200ft. For me, pink lures seems to be at the top of the list. Best of luck.

SpokaneScooter .... Get yourself a handful of J-9 jointed Rapalas. Orange back with white belly, rainbow trout, and dark perch. Troll these 300 feet back, with no weight, at 1.7 to 2.7 mph. If this doesn't produce, it ain't gonna happen. In the last 20 years, this has always produced, and if not, the bite is just tough.
