I decided to take advantage of the nice weather and drive to Lenore for a day of fishing. Unfortunately, the fish weren't as enthusiastic about the ideas I was.
The water was a pea green color that I have never experienced before at this lake in decades of fishing it. Not sure if the lake was turning over or what, but visibility was about a foot. I checked the creek and the southern outlet to see if any of the fish were staging for the spawn yet and only saw one fish at the creek. This means one of two things. 1.) It's cold so they are still in the deep parts of the lake or 2.) the fish numbers are way down.
I've fished this lake many times on the opener and never had trouble finding fish. I also spoke with a local retiree who was on his fourth outing to the lake since it opened and he had yet to hook a fish. It was a disappointing outing to say the least.
Does anyone know if Grant County is having a water table issue? Lenore is about a foot lower than normal water mark and Rocky Ford is about 6-8 inches lower than it has been historically. Rocky Ford is a shell of its former self. Low water, low fish numbers etc.
Getting skunked was still better than working, but let's hope things get better soon.
