Finally! I haven't been posting all the weekend outings where I've been getting skunked on a regular basis this winter, but I was elated to finally get my first fish of 2018. I went to nearby Gene Coulon park and threw a squarebill crankbait (Strike King KVD 1.5 in crawfish color). My first fish was actually a rainbow trout (or is this a kokanee?). A little bit later, I hooked into a nice smallmouth bass. It fought really hard and made a couple of great jumps, but I managed to bring it to shore. It was cold and rainy, but it was definitely worth it. Can't wait until next weekend!

I think it is rainbow but the spots are light. A Kokanee has a forked tail. Can’t see it in your picture.

It's a rainbow trout, then. I looked at another photo I took of the fish, and I can see that the tail is not forked. Thanks a lot for the information!

Nice fish! Nice sharp photos. It always helps the photo if you select a nice background.

Congrats! Welcome to 2018! To me it looks like a cutthroat- jaw line and shape looks cutty and pretty bright; could even be a searun. Nice job!

I'm gonna go with salmonbarry and say cutty due to the elongated jaw line , but definitely a good score from shore??. Thanks for the report, nice to see the bass moving up!
