Steelhead

I went out for a quickie on sunday morning. On the river by 8:15, off the river by 10:30. I ran my circuit in solitude, thoroughly fishing each run with a 2/5th oz 50/50 bcsteel spoon. I covered 2km of prime water in low and clear conditions, focusing on fishing choppy runs, pocket water, and riffles, using stealth tactics. Sun was out and above the tree line the entire time, vis was around 8 feet, and yet despite all that, I still managed to get a nice steely to hand. I won't guess the weight or length because it's irrelevant and i didn't want to cause undue stress to this wild fish trying to get a measurement that and frankly, it was an average sized steelhead. I quickly snapped a pic, keeping her wet and submerged, then let her rest until she decided to power out of my semi loose grasp. The water was brisk but it's worth every painful second of exposure to the glacial waters, knowing this fish will live on and carry on its legacy to the next generation. After that i fished out the remainder of my circuit, circled back to fish the run i caught her in, to see if she had any friends holding in the heavy chop she was sitting in. It wasn't to be though, and that ended the day. I went home later to tie some chironomids and emergers for the upcoming lake season.

Trout twice a year on different lakes in the Kamloops area is what got me hooked on fishing. Of course we were always tourists, and probably didn't hit the best lakes, but Sheridan, Pavilion, and Loon are 3 that I remember going to semi regularly with the family.

Sheridan has some serious trophies in it, although it's unlikely I'll fish it this year. I prefer the cariboo region, with the exception of a couple other quality region 3 lakes.

My best fish out of Sheridan was 29 inches. To this day, still the biggest rainbow I've caught. That fish though was dwarfed by a few I saw caught by others over the years.

Yup that sounds about right. Nice fish by the way, 29" rainbow is a really nice fish. Im totally getting pumped for the lake season now. Back to the tying desk!

Hey man, glad you are still getting into steel on the spoon. I'm working on my own spoon technique. Do you like to let the spoon bounce bottom a bit during each drift, every few seconds or so? Or not at all?

It must be consistently ticking bottom the whole time. I believe the noise that creates is a key element.
