Rough start.... strong finish!!!!
Here’s the story: we launched out of shilshole at 5am and headed out towards jeff head and apple tree cove. We have had a crazy start to the chinook season with dead batteries, non running kickers, non running big motor, all types of problems. With this being said, today was the day to redeem ourselves, but it didn’t start that way. We got to apple tree cove around 6, lots of boats and lots of seaweed!!! Hard to fish. We swapped gas tanks and that was the last time the big motor ran this morning. Fished apple tree cove for about an hour and gave up because of frustration about grass and overall mood about the big motor which we thought we had finally diagnosed and fixed. Headed towards shilshole at about 8, on the kicker motor!!! Got to meadow point at about 1030, dropped some crab pots and said to my dad “ we might as well fish for 5 minutes since the tide change was soon.”
BAM!!! Fish on!! First 2 minutes. Fish goes bananas and dives deep. Knew right away this was a high teen king!! Was ripping line out, going on deep runs, in my head I’m thinking this has to be wild!! After about 5-10 minutes we get it to the boat, hatchery!!! My dad does a killer net job and we land our first 2018 king! 16-19 lbs and what a good fish.
What a battle both with this king and the fishing season so far. Crossing my fingers fishing stays hot and our motors stay running.
Update: the big motor fired up at the end of the day. We think it’s flooding itself out so this weekend will have to do some wrenching and hopefully more fishing!!
Tight lines everybody!
