My son James and I hit the road Friday as soon as I got home. Our plan was to drive to Rimrock lake, put the boat in the water and anchor up to a nice peaceful sunset, then go out in the morning and slay a bunch of kokanee. The plan was spot on, but the fish were not informed of their role in the deal...
The drive to Rimrock is pretty cool. We went over White Pass which was my first time. Pulling the boat was interesting to say the least but we arrived intact and launched at Rimrock Resort and in no time were anchored and enjoying a beautiful star-filled sky and a peaceful night's sleep on the boat. I have decided there is nothing like boat camping, as long as you can find a quiet cove to anchor in. It's like having a personal slice of paradise...
I will say, Rimrock is a very pretty lake with tree-covered mountains and little development. Plus not too much recreational users, even on a beautiful sunny, warm Saturday.
Woke up and got trolling at 5am in anticipation of lots of little kokanee with hopefully a nicer class of fish that maybe no one was mentioning. We fished the east side of the lake from the islands to the dam in the morning. The fishfinder was inundated with fish marks which unfortunately on this day were non-biting fish. We ran those fish over with a variety of presentations at various speeds and in the afternoon even bought some worms to try but nothing, nada, no love.
Final tally for the day was one rainbow lost at the boat and one 9" kokanee. I will admit to being totally perplexed and more than a bit surprised at the lack of action given the amount of fish in the lake. I have no doubt hitting the lake on a day when the fish are biting would be a fast and furious bit of action.
Well, it was hardly a wasted outing as getting to spend a day and night with my son was well worth the drive. Just don't know if I'd be back, at least until someone reports the fish are biting again!
