I’m still fishing for tiger muskies at Merwin Lake with Mike Nielsen of Ariel. Yesterday was very slow with no fish boated, but when the sun came out this afternoon, we raised several fish and Mike caught one that looked like it would break the state record, so we put it in the live well and took it to the Speelyai Hatchery for weighing. The state record is a 31.25 lb. fish caught at Mayfield Lake several years ago. Mike’s fish today, the second largest caught in Washington so far, weighed 31.15 lbs. Since it was not a new record, we released it. It will take about a week to get the photos processed and submitted to Washingtonlakes.com. Mike is doing great for a beginning musky fisherman with 3 fish boated this week. His expert guide (me) so far hasn’t caught one – he’s making me look bad! We didn’t get back out on the lake today because, in the excitement, the keys got locked inside my vehicle and we had to wait until after dark for the tow truck guy to arrive and open my truck.
