Conditions allowed me to take the toon out on Lake Sammamish on Saturday. First off, I headed to Rattlesnake Lake as my first choice, but the lake is down an incredible amount (see pic) so I headed back to Sammy.
Launched at the middle beach at 9:30 and was back in at 2:30. I had a total of 4 strikes and landed 2 Cutt’s. One very nice one and one a bit smaller. Both were caught trolling a Type 6 sinking line with a Christmas colored Boobie Fly. One was called get just to left of the creek and the other as I was rowing quite fast to reach some Gulls feeding on midges. Last week I caught a very nice Cutt/Bow rowing pretty fast also on the Boobie.
I must have wasted an hour of time fishing with no fly on after I had a strike and missed it. My loop knot failed at the connection to the fly line. Need to study more on this knot and check my set up after a hit. I decided to remove the 9’ sinking leader and just tie a three Foot Flourocarbon leader.
Lots of boats out yesterday but I never saw a fish caught. It was possible that two others were caught but I was to far away to really tell. The lake flatten out as I was leaving and I saw a fair amount of rising fish but the action was still slow for my set up. Yesterday the Midge hatch was the stongest I have seen in my 4 trips there. You can see empty shucks on the top of the water and the transformation just before they fly off. Gulls were working in the air and on the water. Drove by the lake today to be disappointed that it was dead calm again. I should have packed and gone out in the morn and not trust weather reports...silly me.
