Meet up a fellow member after work Thursday and was on the water by 2:30pm. Alfafish was already on the water about 45 minutes before me. Launching from the middle beach I could see rising fish out there which always gets me going.
We headed over to the East shoreline not far from the boat launch. Picked up a nice Cutt as I was approaching a few Gulls at 3pm. Working North and back to the West I picked up 2 more including a very nice sized one compared to the other two in the next 25 minutes. For the next 50 minutes I had 8 strikes with only two fished hooked up but both came off. Lots of action from 3-4:15pm with 11 total hits.
I was using my type 6 fly line, attached to a Intermediate 7’ leader attached to a micro swivel, to some Flourocarbon leader. At the business end was a variation of a Mudler Minnow that I thought would be best over some basic versions. All but one of my strikes came from a good pace in my rowing stroke...about 2 mph I was told.
Alfafish was struggling a bit with just one fish from a Black Bugger so for the trip back I tied him up another fly that I felt could gather him more action. On the way back he picks up two fish and a few other strikes. See the pic for the fly type. It’s is paired with the spinner.
The kicker for me was what I caught when we headed back the beach at about 4:30. Rowing at a faster rate to get back sooner I attached a Mepp’s spinner with a fly on the end of it and I picked up my largest Cutt (think it was a CuttBow) to date as it absolutely hammered my Lamiglas Infinity UL Spinning rod. About 20” ( I don’t handle fish and it’s hard to measure them in a net so that’s my guess) and very thick. Much thicker than any other fish that I had caught there. It was more on the Beaver Lake Rainbows Side than the normal Sammy side in thickness. I was maybe 200 yards from the creek mouth heading east to west. The pic may not justify its size as it was 4:40pm and getting dark, plus my net makes larger fish look smaller than they really are because they bow more.
Great action for such a short outing. Looking forward to next Monday and Tuesday which should be good after this weekend Sat storm.
