Was rough start this morning. Headed out early. Was back in the driveway for emergency boat repairs. Ugh! So got the boat fixed by noon and headed back down. Day would have been a 4 if the boat ran and I could of fished the full day I wanted to. Started trolling around the south buoy at 1 moving north. First fish in 20 minutes. Nice little hatchery coho. Was 15 inches, so really nice I thought. Next fish at about 2. Another hatchery coho. About 14 inches. Last fish was a nice 16 inch cutthroat. Had three others to the boat. Don't know how they popped off, but they did. Sharp hooks, so you got me. Some days you win and some days you don't win quite as well. Had six other strikes I saw and maybe a few more I missed since the hooks came back bare a couple times during bait check. Beautiful day out though. Minus the frustration of a boat not running right. All fixed now though so I'm ready for the morning. Dick Nites worked well with a little piece of night crawler on the hook. Solid gold didn't seem to do anything. Most strikes on a green and white one and split silver gold one. Number 40 Lurh Jensen dodger with 18 inches of leader to the Dick Nite. Fished at 15 feet in 80 to 90 feet of water. Trolled at about 1.7 mph. Got to put that lure way behind the boat though! Probably 70 or 80 feet at least. No real secrets. Doing what everyone else is doing I suppose other than a Dick Nite because I have them. Don't need to spend money on the other stuff since they still seem to work. My buddy drove by about 1:45 . He was out looking for smallies. Been there since about 8:30. Said he got one dink. So I think I picked the right target species. Hopefully get a couple limits tomorrow of cutthroat and load the smoker up.

Sorry to hear you had some mechanical problems with your boat but glad to hear you got back out there and had some fishing action with the Cutthroat and adipose fin clipped Coho on Lake Sammamish. You mentioned you were using a setback of 70 to 80 "feet" from the boat. Although I think that will put you into fish, if you want my suggestion and want to try to maximize your fish encounter potential, utilizing a much greater setback could prove to be more effective. Give it a try next time you are on the lake. My fishing partner and I utilize a setback of at least 50 "yards" and most of the time its 60 to 70 "yards". That setback lately has worked very well for us. Just my two cents worth.

I have a similar set up Sharphooks. You always have friends when you have a boat and they want to go out. I'm sure you know how it is. Plus I enjoy my friends. Wouldn't have them otherwise. So I need my boat. I do a lot of large lake and saltwater also, so I need the boat for those things. And it's also nice to sit in a boat with the canvas up and a heater plus that hot cup of coffee in the winter on the river. So a kayak doesn't work for me. I know the wire can sing a little at times. I have that mostly fixed now. We had plenty of fish bite on Saturday. Mainly I had a new guy out on the boat. Never did much fishing in his life, so I let him have at every strike. He has watched too many Babe Winkleman shows I think. Try to get him to get his pole up and he just can't do it. No need to set the hook out of the downrigger either. Those hooks are sharp already. He'll learn. As they say the oxen is slow, but the earth is patient. I am going to lengthen up the line when out next time. Have you tried any of those synthetic baits on your lure? I'm just wondering how they work compared to a small piece of worm? Sounds like you are out all the time? I got one of those day jobs, so I'm stuck with the weekend warrior stuff and short fish trips after work. Well that is until it warms up and the walleye start going nuts over east, up north and back in Montana. Actually I think they are doing okay over at Roosevelt jigging for walleye right now. Tasty! Go get those fish!

Hey Sharphooks. Well as they say "A boat is the biggest hole in the water." But the pay off is often well worth it I find. So your fishing that far behind the boat? I'm always a little worried being that far behind. Don't want my line run over. I'll give that a whirl next time I'm out though. Can't hurt. I know those cutthroat are often a little touchy about coming close to the boat.

My boat is powered by two outboard motors, a 150 HP for traveling and a 5 HP motor for trolling. My tolling motor can put a lot of sound vibration into the water of the lake which transmits outward. I've learned from several authorities that fish tend to shy away from boats and surrounding areas when they encounter such noise. That's why I've become a user of the long setbacks from the boat. For me and my fishing partner, we know they are more effective than shorter setbacks as you seem to use. On the other hand, if your craft is of the more silent un-motorized type type such as a kayak, you may well be able to utilize with effectiveness a much shorter setback from the boat.
