Launched at about 10 a.m. and headed towards West end of lake. Water clear and 46 degrees, light and variable wind with rain squalls off and on during the day. Looked to be about a dozen or so fishermen on the water. Saw fish rising right away but action was slow. A few nets flying here and there but not a lot of hookups to be seen. Fish being very finicky.
Started out with a size 12 chironomid in black and silver and picked up one fish about 14 inches. Noticed a group of guys getting some action near the North shore so headed that way with my catching buddy right behind. Fixed up my catching buddy with a size 18 green chironomid and he caught 2 right away, both around 15 inches. Then I looked down at the water and found out why the action was getting hot. A massive Mayfly hatch was in progress and they were all over the surface of the water. I switched to a cripple emerger and immediately hooked up. Everyone was watching the feeding frenzy and trying to match the hatch but most were unsuccessful. Very fun and maddening at the same time.
Switched back to my black chironomid and hit a few more on my way back to the launch point. Ended up netting 5, buddy netted 2. A pretty good day considering the tough weather conditions.
