My friend, Joey, and I got a late, opening day, start because of having to put a new O2 sensor in the Grandpa Mobile so we finally made it to the boat launch around 1:30. The ramp area was like a parking lot with not enough room to make the necessary turn to launch, so we ended up having to back the trailer down to the ramp. Not the type of fun I was expecting, but we didn't hit any parked vehicles so all was good.
This being our first time on this lake we started trolling down the right shoreline and hooked our first fish after going about 200 feet. We were getting hits consistently, just just weren't hooking up, though we did manage to catch a couple of more fish on our first pass down the lake. Just as we made our turn to head back the wind really picked up which made trolling back a bit of a challenge. Had to have to motor on 4 or 5 just to make headway. Any slower and the wind just pushed us backward. At one point there were actually white caps on the lake!
After about an 20 - 30 minutes we made it back to the ramp with our two limits of fish. If the wind had not been blowing so hard we probably would have made another couple of passes looking for one of those tagged Derby fish. Maybe next time!
A couple of weeks ago I picked up the new colors of the Elgin God's Tooth spoons. For this trip I used the Hammered Copper and Joey used the Brown Trout. We were long lining them with no weight and true to form for these lures, the fish were hammering them!
All in all, it was a productive day on a new lake. I'm pretty sure we'll be back to Storm Lake soon!
