Got to Wawawai at around 6:30 and gave the day a 4 because of a nice 4lb 5oz 18 inch fish caught at the end of the trip. At the start, noticed that the water temp was 52-53 and much lower than it was earlier in the week late afternoon where some of the shallows were up in the 57-58. Fished some structure ranging from 5-20 FOW and the fish were really hesitant only picking up an occasional small fish. Fished 3 spots and deeper slope that really produced earlier in the week. Started to kick myself for fishing morning rather than afternoon when the water temp might come up a bit. Eventually started to figure out that fish would hit aggressively on a smolt imitation like Rapala Husky Jerk. Got a lot better and the size improved a little bit ranging more into the 11-13" range for the larger fish. Once I figured that out, started targeting fish this way, even though only an occasional smolt or fish boiling on smolt was around, at least one of the fish still had a smolt in its gullet so they must have been keyed on smolts and hoping to get lucky. Getting close to 11 and ready to call it, but decided to stop at one place I had fished earlier with little action. Got several out of a rock pile including this nice female that looked to be prespawn in about 6 FOW on the HJ-12 shown in one of the pictures.
