Took my son in law, brother in law, and 4 grandkids to Wolfe state park on Hoods Canal for some clam digging & oyster shucking. The weather was great and we hit the ferries at Edmonds and Kingston at the perfect times. We were early, so we figured we'd get our oysters shucked, eat lunch, and then hit the clam beds. It worked perfectly. The oysters were plentiful and the grandkids scoured the beach for treasures while we did the hard work . Now, if there is an easy way to shuck them I would like to know. Thank god for leather gloves and a lot of patience! The clam beds are loaded with both steamers and butters. There is a new variety of steamers called a "varnish clam". They look as though they have taken over and maybe invaded the native little necks. They tasted great & I have no idea as to whether fish and wildlife have any plans to eradicate them. The oysters were still nice and firm and of course the clams were great!
The beach closes on the 15th of May.
