What a fun day fishing the Potholes!

I joined NWFR Rob Holman and his friend Rob, and set off with Shelby Ross of Ross Outdoor Adventures. We spent the day fishing for walleye and it was a blast! Shelby let us know that the plug bite was on. This is definitely one of my favorite ways to catch walleye.
Watching the rod double over from a big walleye is just a thrill and a half!

The day started a little cool and breezy but got better as it progressed. We ran four rods, two on planer boards. The plugs were run back 120-140 feet, planer boards out 40 feet from the boat. The planer boards did better overall today.

Shelby runs Flicker Shads and the two hot colors were fire tiger and silver. He worked us around the underwater humps, keeping the gear running in 15-20 feet deep water to avoid the weeds. This was pretty effective and very impressive to see Shelby working the underwater structure. He certainly knows this reservoir!

We ended the day with about a dozen nice eater walleye ranging 16 to 21 ¾”. Shelby has a policy of releasing anything over 22” to preserve the fishery. We released one 23” fish today.

Another great day of fishing the Potholes with Shelby Ross!
