I have been fishing American lake since 2006, and have never seen a Spring like this one. Been fishing since early May. Until Yesterday nothing, nada, zilch. A few bass but that's it. I have tried a lot of different things, trolling, tightline, drifting, fishing from shore, different baits. I even went back to the old standby, worms. All I caught on worms were some small bass.

Well, yesterday it finally paid off. We went out trolling for 2 hours or more Wednesday morning. Using a hula skirt, nothing, Used a wedding ring, Nothing. Fished off a dock at the Army RV park for an hour or so around noon, with salmon eggs. Nothing. Tried worms, nothing. Tried Power Bait nothing. Went to the fishing dock at the Army's Shoreline park around 5 PM. There were five people there fishing. They had nothing. Decided to try GULP. In about 20 minutes had a hit. A nice 15 inch, 1 1/2 lb Rainbow. Beautiful fish.

So what's going on with American Lake? I have talked to a lot of fishermen and they all say it's we really bad this Spring. I have seen a few being caught, but nowhere like previous years. Las t fall I had one day when caught three nice rainbows in less than ten minutes.

Been fishing American since the early 80's and I remember saying the same thing. Curtian things do work consistanly there. The one thing that brings um when your still fishing is chum. An old timer once said to me"You gotta feed em". Since its legal there why not. The other is check the trees for catapillar nests. If they're active good luck with the rainbows no matter what you use. As far as kokanee, been there three times now and I've done quite well each time. Pop gear, Ford Fenders, wedding rings and maggots will get the job done once you find where and how deep they are. Happy hunting

Update: Went out again, about 7:30 PM. This time in my boat and anchored about 100 feet off the fishing dock at Shoreline Park. Got two nice rainbows withing 20 minutes using GULP! One 13 inch the other 15 inch. There's a deep spot there. Don't know how deep. Don't have a Depth Sounder, but I must have put out 60 feet of anchor line (at an angle of course) so it's probably 30 or more feet deep. The Army was putting on a show with helicopters dropping paratroops and picking them up. So the fishing was good and so was the entertainment.
