Fished the upper Yakima in Cle Elum (not sure why that river isn't listed on this site?) and had a really fun day. We boated around 12 fish total, mostly cutthroat, but a few rainbows and hybrids mixed in. The river was running a little faster than normal, so we focused on fishing the slower edges of seems and banks with big dropoffs where the water was a little slower and had action all day. Netted a beautiful 15 in. cutty at about 1pm on a purple psycho prince (sz 14), but the fish were taking lightning bugs (sz 16) and a march brown bead head caddis larva (sz 18) netted me about 6 fish in 2 hours. Didn't see much surface action, and there wasn't any cloud cover or wind , so we didn't even bother with dry flies since the nymphing was so productive.

One of the flies that caught my attention as a novice fly angler was the “Purple Psycho Prince”
Love Purple, UW, Hendrix and know that Prince was super talented.

Man, so nice to see a report on the ‘Upper’ Cle Elum River. Nobody ever reports on it. Regardless if not in the options drop down, people could just report on the ‘Cle Elum’ river as you did. I’lol be up there in a couple days, have to bring my 3 wt. thanks!

I'm investing in a 3wt specifically for this section of the river. Good luck, wishing you tight lines! Let me know if you see any summer stones!

Sounds like you had a terrific day! I’ve been fishing that stretch since mid June. I usually trek and wade as I’m trying to get to know the river. Due to the flow changes things seem to be pretty hit and miss. My first day I landed a nice almost 20” cutthroat and I thought I had it all figure out? LOL. Since then, I’ve caught plenty of smaller, beautiful fish and have learned a bit. That stretch of river is quiet with no pressure.
