I hadn't heard any recent Kokanee reports as most regional anglers have been keyed in on Upper Columbia Kings. I decided to hit Conconully Reservoir. The lake is down considerably but its still very possible to launch smaller boats or kayaks. I started trolling mid-lake not marking much until I reached the dam. Even then the bite was sporadic but as soon as the sun hit the water it lit up. On each pass in front of the dam I would get 1 to 3 bites and in an hour and a half I had a limit of fish in the boat.

To make the day more interesting. I decided test a long held belief that shorter leaders were superior to longer leaders. I used identical gear but changed only leader length (6" vs 18"). The results were very interesting. Fish were in 30-35' of water holding anywhere from 20' to hard on the bottom. 2 oz at 80' on line counter put me in the strike zone.

Great report and video as always. Leader length (as well as color, dodger, and depth) is one of those variables that can change day to day. Really appreciate your test, gives me more confidence with what I do. ;-)

If you mentioned trolling speed I missed it. What trolling speed have you found effective for Kokanee? What is size range of Kokanee in Conconully Res. this year?

Great video as always. Just curious, with all the Kokanee fishing you do, what’s your favorite way to prepare kokes? Know of any ways of smoking or canning that will dissolve those little bones? I’d fish for more Kokanee if I could get a good preparation method. Thanks!

Canning dissolves the bones and its a great way to prepare Kokanee.

What about "side of the boat"? Seems like sometimes no matter what I do one side of the boat hooks up more than the other. Do you ever notice this? Not much difference between sides on your boat though.

Very nice informative video. I normally use a 8-10 inch leader, but will be trying an 18 inch leader as well to see if it performs as good as my shorter leader. Thank you. How much sliding weight, setback, boat speed, with 12 pound mono, and a micro hootchie do you thing might be successfull when fishing on a shallow lake that's only 20 feet deep? Thanks for the suggestion. Denny
