Fishing the Brewster Pool is quite simple for me as I live really close and can get an early start and know the weather before I head out. Fortunately for me, I get to fish during the week so less pressure from others.
The fishing today was good with a great fish on soon after starting.
I was at the launch at 4:30 and the first one there. Another boat came in to launch soon after with the same boat as mine, and we had a nice talk. He was heading to Astoria soon to fish and I asked him if his boat was capable there he said it was. I asked if he had covered the hole in the bow where the anchor goes and he has not, so I told him of the story where my boat almost sunk with the waves coming over the bow in the wind storm at the Brewster Derby several years ago.
For anyone owning a 2007 Jetcraft the Anchor storage hole in the bow dumps directly into the boat. I fixed a plexiglass cover for it and contacted the manufacturer about the problem, of course, I heard nothing back, but see in all the future years the anchor compartment is sealed off from the boat.
Anyway on to my report.
I dropped two lines in before daylight by Pelican Point and using dropper weights 8oz lead balls using a LEO med flasher on one and a Leo large flasher on the other with a mini cut plug on one and the regular cut plug on the other. I let out 30' and 50' ft and after a few circles hooked a king on the med flasher side and had a very nice fight, bringing in a hatchery king. Being a 2 adult fish limit, I tried other tackle and moved upriver to see if they have moved there and after a couple of hours called it a day with one dandy in the boat!
It was a fantastic day on the river and the best part most of the guides have moved on, so no interference with them and just a few boats fishing, so makes for a better day all around. There is better King fishing elsewhere, but the pool should have fish until they close it. Nothing like the fish slaughter of opening day this year, but consistent enough to keep going out
