Headed over to Potholes on Saturday morning to check out the walleye fishing. We launched out of the state park and motored over to fish some humps out in front of the dunes. The wind was blowing pretty good; not whitecaps but enough to make casting a jig a pain. I had two friends with me Ben and his FIL Mark. Mark caught a nice 21.5 inch eye on a perch swim bait but the wind caused us to give up jigging and to begin trolling.
We started off with a multitude of colors and crossed back in forth from one side of the dunes to the other. It soon became apparent that a chartreuse colored smile blade with silver beads was the ticket. We only picked up one dink walleye. We did however troll up 10 bullheads, 6 largemouth, 2 bull bluegills and 8 perch. We kept 4 quality perch and released the others. I moved us to another group of humps where Ben picked up a nice 22.5 inch eye a I caught a 21.5 and a 24 incher; that was it for walleyes. The highlight for me was when i hooked a 20 lb. carp in the dorsal fin. A 10 minute plus fight ensued but I finally landed that thing. It was released after a quick picture.
The walleye fishing was slow but at least the ones we caught were studs. I think the water temp needs to drop another 5 degrees to about 60 before the fall bite really picks up.
