Launched out of Porcupine with my buddy Jay at 0715. The air temp was about 24; so yes it felt like December not the end of October. We started off fishing the flat near the red house at Lapham's (turn right after launching and look for the big red house on the hill). There is a weed bed there that has produced throughout most of the summer. Jay started off throwing a blade bait and I was throwing a jigging spoon. After about 10 minutes Jay hooked a 6 lb. smallie, she jumped out of the water 3 or 4 times. Pretty impressive for a fish that size. A few minutes later I caught 2 eyes on successive casts using a Kastmaster silver jigging spoon. That was all the action we saw so we headed up the Arm.

We targeted weed beds with jigs and picked up a couple more keeper eyes including one about 20 inches. After that died down we hit some of the traditional winter time holes and caught a bunch more eyes; we had to weigh through a lot of dinks to find any keepers. We also found a bunch of Burbot; mostly smaller males that are moving up river to get ready for the spawn.

Total catch for the day was 67 eyes, kept 7, 10 Burbot, and 1 smallie. Water temp was about 53 and visibility was 10 feet.

We made it out to the main river last weekend and caught 10 eyes, only 1 was worth keeping. We should have been in a bass tournament as we caught 10 smallies all between 2 1/2 & 3 lbs. I am hoping to get out to Potholes this coming weekend if the wind stays manageable.

Glad to hear you found them and got some decent eaters. Are those fish that are running up the narrows at around 80 ft. Burbot? Looks like a parade but hard to get a bite? Have a few Blade Baits but not sure exactly how and when to use them. Guess I better get out there and start practicing. Thanks for the report.

All of the burbot we caught were in 55-60 FOW. I caught one on a jigging spoon, the rest were caught on a dropshot. I personally like using blade baits anytime the water temp is below 60 degrees. Any place you use jigs is a good place to use a blade bait; areas with lots of snags being the exception. As the water gets colder I reduce the height that I jig the blade bait above the bottom. For burbot, generally, anything with chartreuse be it a grub, swimbait or senko is the go to color on the Arm.

This week's temps make me happy we chose last week to be at Roosevelt. Some things Mrs. Hewesfisher just doesn't like, wind and cold. Can make it warm, but can't make water calm. Good on you for toughing out the cold and putting some in the cooler!!
