This is a late report...
I got invited as a guest to fish with NWFR member rseas and his friend Ron. Ron is a "local expert" on fly fishing Lone Lake on Whidbey Island. I was excited to learn some new tricks and it's been years since fishing Lone lake so I was really looking forward to the day.
I met Ron in Mukilteo and we hopped on the ferry for the 20 minute ride to Whidbey Island. We met up with rseas and by a leisdurely 9:30am we were on the water and fishing.
We fished anchored up with chironomids off the bottom and caught a few fish, lost a few. In between rseas rowed us around in his new (to him) drift boat and we pulled wooley buggers. With the heater going it turned out to be a pleasant day. There were about 3-4 other anglers on the lake so it was pretty much empty. While not red hot fishing, the fish that are in there are quality 16-18" rainbows and well worth catching (and releasing, we didn't keep any fish).
I learned some new fly fishing techniques and want to thank rseas and Ron for taking me out and motivating me to clean the dust off my fly rods! I'll be out there again for sure!
