We spent a beautiful morning fishing the lower Walla Walla today. Having scouted it out last time we gave it a more serious effort today. The weather was great, mostly sunny, 45-50 degrees, no wind. The water had a little bit of color, was 40-42 degrees, and still about 300cfs. The rain has had no effect yet. Didn't find any steelhead, but today we ran into the bull trout. Nice feisty fish 13-14 inches. At first I thought small mouth but the fight just kept up. They were holding where you expect steelhead, or trout, between the seam edge and the overgrown bank, Gotta be close. The shot with my fly rod was just after I lost my whole tapered leader and purple peril fly to the cover. We fished flies for about 2 hours near the pump station above the highway 12 bridge at 9 mile, but the real action was at the tri-state steelheaders access about a mile below the bridge. Bobber doggin with a 1/4 oz aerojig. Retrieve after the drift/swing slow, several hits came on the retrieve right near the bank, in the trees. Use the fence ladders, then it is serious brush-beating to get into position. I slid right in to my waist. Plan a way out.
