Headed down to Lake Sammamish to try out the boat after some engine work and try our luck for cutthroat trout. We did not start fishing until 1:30pm in the afternoon as we had morning duties and after trying the boat out for a few minutes to make sure we could get back to the boat launch. We planned on heading down to the Redmond end of the lake but as we neared the water tester, we saw many birds in the area and decided to stop and try it out. We put our lines out and in exactly half an hour we had our first fish. We use downriggers and sometimes it is hard to tell when you have a fish on, especially if it is of the smaller variety. Well, this one was a monster by our standards. Got him in the net and he measured 18" and weighed right at 2 pounds. That is about as big as we ever catch on Lake Sammamish. After an hour and a half we had another that weighed in at a pound and a half. Not bad, 2 nice fish in an hour and a half. We ended up with four cutties in 3 hours of fishing, a pretty good day for starting so late. The wind was blowing off and on and several short rain squalls passed by, but all in all a great day to be out on the lake. There were 2 other boats on the lake when we started but they were gone after the first hour. Amazing that we can live in a metro area with 6 million people and be the only boat out on the lake in the middle of suburbia. It helps to have a nice cabin to hide in when the weather is bad so we have it pretty much made compared to the smaller boats. We are usually the biggest boat on the lake at 24 feet. Love to see more of you out there.

I am glad to hear someone is catching fish despite the weather! Did you use spinners, wedding rings or something else? Thanks for the report.

I forgot to put that in the report. We use Old Goat lures.

Glad you got to experience some of the larger fish in this trip. I personally did better getting the 18” and above in the earlier months of the Fall/Winter season, but then again I have been fishing more top water the past month and you still can find a 18” cruiser or two but most are on the smaller side. What depth were you at? Great Job!

Our average depth in the winter is 20 feet. That seems to always get us in the area where the fish are.
