My first Saltwater fishing out of a boat!
Picked up an older 12' Rigid Inflatable yacht tender for the engine, 40 4 stroke Honda, but after running around on the water with it decided I may keep it as my only other salt qualified boat is a PortaBote with a 6 /12 hp motor. Not really enough for tide changes.
I launched out of Redondo, which was an experience in itself as they have not put the docks in yet. After running around for a while I settled down to try my hand at Flounder. I had watched vids on what people were using and read up on the regs so my confidence was fairly high.
I ended up fishing just south of the boat launch in about 20' of water where there were rocks that went to sand. The first set up was a 1 oz Carolina rig with half of a Gulp sand worm threaded up the hook using a light 8' pole and a Daiwa casting reel, 20 lb braid with a 10 lb mono leader. About three casts in I brought in an undersized 15" Ling Cod!
Another couple casts with a slow popping retrieve and bingo! Small 12" Flounder. I was going to toss it back but it started bleeding pretty bad when I pulled the hook, so #1 in the boat.
Just for fun and try something different I switched to a three way swivel with a 1 oz surf lead and single #1 hook with a white floater ball and a half Gulp sand worm on it. I let this sit so the hook would float some, and in short order I started seeing nibbles on it. Another Flounder! This one was bigger and had some girth to it. #2 in the boat!
A few casts later and I caught another, bigger, Flounder and called it a day. I only wanted a few to try as I do not remember ever eating Flounder. Not a lot of meat on the smaller ones!
All in all it was a good experience. The fact the water (tide change) was rougher than a cobb and the wonky boat launch were 'exciting' to say the least. I like the RIB though, and will keep it. It is like a little cork out on the rough stuff!
