Beautiful but crazy day in MA 10 today. Lines down near the 9/10 line at 7:20 and worked our way through 500 to 600 feet of water south parallel to the oil docks, 90 feet on the wire. Just south of the oil docks fish on and it screams 90 degrees across the stern and tangles in my wife’s line. We manage to get it close to the boat but everything is so tangled up we can’t get it close to the net. We can see though that it is a chinook when it shows it’s large heavily spotted tail as it shakes itself loose. After untangling we head back through the same area and hook up again. This time I can’t get the line off the clip after much effort so decide to bring up the down rigger. We get the clip up, fish still on and I reach out and release the clip apparently giving enough slack that fish comes unbuttoned and swims away. Aargh. We reset and troll back through the same area and managed to hook up again and netted a nice 25 inch hatchery coho. We worked the same area for a while but couldn’t get a fish so moved on and managed another smaller hatchery coho 700 FOW near the 9/10 line.
All hookups we’re on Purple Haze blinky flashers with PH hooches and herring strip.
I have to give a shout out to my wife Barbie. She has never been fond of being on the water but over the last couple of years she has turned into a very good driver, nailing the speed and handling of the boat and seems to have a knack for putting us on some fish. I’m so greatful to have her out on the salt with me.
