Day Two of my last weekend of coho fishing for this year and out with another cool group of guys. Rob from NWFR, his brother Ron, Ryan from Skiprock Distillery, and his friend Dan from Bickford Ford.

We met and had the boat in the water promptly at 7am, 4th in line at the sling. We had no big motor today (tilt issues) but it didn’t matter as we were fishing the border of Area 10 down to the oil docks. Today I decided to go with 4 rods, two on downriggers, one Deep Six, and one slider weight on the starboard downrigger cable. This system worked really well all day with just one tangle.

The downrigger rods I set deeper, 90 and 70 feet, and the deep six 60-100 feet. The slider ran at 70 feet on the 90 foot DR. All our action came off the two rigger setups, flasher and hoochies with herring strip. Hoochies were a brownish-red color combo that I’ve had good success with and today proved the same.

Trolling speed was 3-3.2mph, with and against the outgoing tide. High tide was at 8am.

The action started right away with several fish coming in on the riggers, the 90 foot rod showed the most action. The crew did well landing these fish around the various lines out, we lost one fish at the boat – stuff happens.

One hit on the sliding weight (a spoon) and all we got back was an eyeball…

Finally Tally for the day which ended at 12:30 was 5 nice coho in the boat and one lost.

A nice end to what was for me a frustrating coho season. I just couldn’t get in a rhythm this year. We got fish, but not the numbers I was hoping for and used to. On a positive note, the breakaway flasher system Randy Rauscher showed me works great and we had a blast playing these fish without a flasher dragging along.
