Each year as water temps cool on the Willamette River White Sturgeon pile into the Swan Island Basin to tuck out of the current from winter rains and to enjoy the warmer water temps created by the heated dry docks and the shallower stagnant water. I always try and make at least one pilgrimage here a year and it almost never disappoints. Traditionally herring is my go to bait here but I always carry smelt and squid as some days those baits outshine the others. On this trip squid was by far the most productive bait and I hooked 15 and landed 13 in just 3 hours of fishing. Most were 2-4' but I did catch two over 5'.
