This report is for Hawk Creek. With the Winter chill coming I decided to try out one of the burbot hot spots for shore fishing. What I remember from last year is that burbot like to head butt or nip at your bait so I went out with Carolina Riggs using some smaller circle hooks. These are pretty important for catfish so I assumed it might help my hook sets with burbot. Started at 5:00 p.m. and finished at 1:00 a.m. I caught two 12-in burbot and lost a 3 pounder at shore. Caught a beautiful looking rainbow as well. Here's the thing though I probably had seven or eight bites where I lost the worm or the hook set. Last year I just used your typical gamakatsu octopus hooks. I experienced the same issue but had way more hook sets. If anybody has any thoughts feel free to comment below.

Either way it's obvious they were wanting to bite I have a feeling that they were pretty small. I use a Carolina rig with 1 oz weight and 2 ft to the leader with two floating beads and one sinking bead. I use this compact makeup case from rapala with a black light to charge the beads.

In addition to the fishing I witnessed a couple of river otters harassing the hell out of a coyote who was trying to come down to shore and get water. Plenty of yelping and grunting could be heard. I've never witnessed them being aggressive before but you can see videos of them down in South America taking out alligators and mountain lions.

What worked:
Floating glow beads
Worms
Patience, honestly I had a bite every 30 minutes on average.

What didn't work:
Possibly Circle hooks?
Trying to get a drink of water (if you are a coyote)

ifightnerdz - For burbot fishing a jig with a grub or swimbait usually works fine on the Arm. Those burbot eat crayfish and perch so anything that looks like those two works well. We caught 8 on Saturday and I actually pulled a live perch from ones mouth, so there you go. In previous years when I have fished Hawk Creek I would catch burbot on jigs or blade baits. I could usually tell it was a burbot because I noticed they often hit on the jig up versus walleyes who usually hit on the way down. Just some thoughts.

Yeah I forget to mention that I'm shore fishing. It's a bit difficult to toss things like blade baits. I'm going to try The kettle River tonight and I'm putting stinger hooks on.

I killed it tonight on Kettle. I think my problem at hawk creek was merely not being deep enough and getting small fish bites.

Hey thanks for the report and the comment on the otters. Those things can be real nasty and I don't think a coyote would be much of a challenge for one. They can be real territorial.
