I remember when I was young my mom and two older brothers took me smelt dip, and it was so fun. Now that I have two boys of my own what a great way to share the experience and passing on the tradition. So when WDFW announced an open day, we got our gears ready and off we went on March 5, 2022. The bank access to the Cowlitz River at this location were steep in most places, but after a little we found a location. There where plenty of smelt swimming up the bank before the 8 AM start. Most avid dippers got their limit of 10 pound in one to two dips. It took us a little longer to get our limit. We found that it best to dip along the bottom near the bank. The boys and we had a great time.
