Went to Rock lake Friday, this is the earliest I have fished the lake. Caught 2 limits, 3 nice 16" and a bunch of smaller 9-10". Was a beautiful day and quite a few people were out. Air temp in low 40s with no wind, mostly sunny. Water temp at south end was 39F. We put in around 9am and motored to my normal spot on the south end on west side of lake below pinnacles. We trolled two Macks mini wiggle hoochies 18" leader behind a small dodger, both tipped with worm one green one pink. Trolled just below surface about 100 foot behind boat. We made one pass and only managed one strike at 26' deep (kept spotting fish so dropped one line down to see what it was).
After the one pass with no action we pulled up gear and ran to the North end. Trolled between West bay and creek mudline, just below surface. Water temp was reading 42F, touch warmer than South end. We made short runs back and forth and were getting consistent hits and started catching fish. They seemed to prefer a slow troll, 1-1.3mph. They were biting short and needed a little coaxing to commit; feel bite, drop bait back and pull forward normally sealed the deal. We also added a drop of herring oil to spice things up.
We were running Green and Pink wiggle hoochies. Both were working but the pink produced all 3 16" trout, could have been just luck.
What a great day, this lake consistently produces good fishing!
