1/17/2023 5:34:43 PMJWSCOTT, the art of jigging is more about where to do it then the technique which is also important. But you can jig all day in the wrong place and never catch anything. The time of year really dictates how we jig. Cold water means slow jig up and hold your rod tip up high while your jig slowly pendulums back to the bottom. Most of the eyes we catch this time of year don't hit so much as they just pick the jig up off the bottom. I also don't pull my jig very far off the bottom. If I feel any weight when I pull it up I start setting the hook slowly. Sometimes slowly pulling it away encourages the eyes to more aggressively grab my jig. I work blade baits and jigging raps in a similar fashion in that I don't pull them as fast or that far off the bottom. Everyone once in while you should do a quick aggressive jig just to see if anything is following your bait. That may cause them to instinctively go after jig or jigging rap. The fishing should start to pickup once the water level starts to drop.
