I hit the lake at about 5 pm, and found what looked to be a small midge hatch getting worked by a couple of fish. I decided to blow them off, and prospected at depth with a series of leach/damsel imitations. I caught one on a black bead head bugger on a first cast with it near the ramp, and then had a series of hits without a hook up along the eastern shore. Trout were slow so I switched to a bass popper and worked the eastern shore at about 8pm. Around 9 pm I started noticing some rising in the middle of the lake in about 15' of water off the big point on the west side. I tossed a Gulper Special that I had tied earlier in the day, and nailed one on my first cast to a fish with it. At the boat I lost the fish when my 6x tippet broke. I lost my only other Gulper mysteriously, when repositioning the canoe. A parachute adams was snubbed, putting down every fish I cast to. Both fish that I caught were 10" or so, and both released to fight again. I now see where the gulpers are designed to imitate the callibaetis spinners, so that must have been the surface action I was seeing, midges were everywhere, but seemed to be snubbed. I left the lake at 10pm satisfied with some fun fishing, and unable to tie on another fly.
